Paint tools

Mix the 26 calibrated paints in your browser, with the same model the lessons use.

These tools run the model of Section 2.6 in your browser, on the same data as the lessons. They mix only the 26 calibrated paints, the ones whose tints Okumura measured, together with titanium white. Proportions are by weight.

A screen can only approximate a paint color, and the most vivid paints lie outside what a monitor can show, so the numbers are more trustworthy than the swatches. Lightness runs from 0 for black to 100 for white; chroma is how vivid the color is; hue is an angle around the color circle, with about 0° a pinkish red, 90° yellow, 180° a blue-green and 270° blue (Section 1.7).

Mix up to three paints

Pick up to three paints and white, and set how many parts of each go in.

Follow a mixing line

Two paints mixed in steps of ten percent, from all of one to all of the other. Most lines sag toward gray in the middle, and a red and a blue from opposite sides of the circle can pass right through it (Section 3.1).

Find a paint’s most vivid tint

A dark transparent paint is most vivid in a tint, and an opaque or light one is most vivid straight from the tube (Section 3.4). The line is the model; the open circles are Okumura’s measurements of real paint.
